The new 2019 BMW 7-series is bound to ruffle a few feathers: how is it not possible to comment on the latest limousine facelift without talking about that face?
The super-sized grille is bound to be the talking point of the 2019 facelift, regardless of the updated iDrive 7.0, the latest infotainment system, the cleaner powertrains and other tech foisted upon Munich’s limousine leader.
Designers say the twin kidney grille – a staple of BMW car design for decades – has grown by a colossal 40%. You read that right. The new 7-series is being eaten by its own face.
It’s easy to sneer, so let’s allow BMW to explain itself. ‘The extensive design refresh at the front end – which now rises 50mm taller at its foremost point – plays a particularly prominent role in giving the new BMW 7-series its more powerful visual presence,’ says today’s announcement. ‘The new bonnet has more sharply cut contour lines and a larger BMW roundel. The dominant force of the reworked front end is the BMW kidney grille, with its single-piece surround, whose surface area has grown by some 40%. The grille teams up with the slimmer headlights to create a stylistically appealing contrast and add a new strand to the character of BMW’s luxury-class models.’

What else do I need to know about the facelifted new 2019 BMW 7-series?
The fundamentals of the 7-series design are little changed. There are slimmer headlamps, reprofiled rear lights and some of the bumpers and details are scrubbed up a little. But this is detail stuff: you won’t mistake this for anything other than a BMW saloon.
Inside the 7-series cabin has been updated too, with new types of leather available to swathe every surface. When equipped with the ultra-quilted finish, as below, it makes the cabin a sumptuous cockpit indeed.
Extra sound deadening is said to make this a particularly hushed interior, and double-glazed Comfort glass is available as an option for bank-vault refinement.
You’ll notice the latest BMW iDrive v7.0, which brings the latest infotainment system and more digital dials in the 12.3-inch display. Rear-seat passengers can spec 10-inch, HD touchscreens on the front seatbacks, which can be synced with a built-in Blu-ray player.
Engines, specs, emissions
Engine choices on the new 2019 7-series include a V12 with exhaust emissions filter, a plug-in hybrid with CO2 emissions of just 48g/km and a range of 3.0-litre diesels. The line-up looks like this:

Other new details on the facelifted 7-series include the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which lets owners talk to their cars by saying ‘Hey BMW’ and controlling many settings, including heating, lighting and seat massages. Voice control is the next frontier for development and you can expect to see vocal recognition improve significantly in the coming years.
